Bozeman, MT Fly Fishing Report 6/20/19
June is one of our favorite months of the year to be an angler in Bozeman, MT. Dry fly fishing on the Missouri River and Paradise Valley Spring Creeks is great with PMDs, Caddis, and ants keeping our trout looking up. Dropping flows on the Madison River make streamer and nymphing great up tight against the banks, with some of the largest trout of the year caught each June. The Gallatin River is on the verge of really coming into shape. The Yellowstone River and other larger freestone rivers are still running high, but are just a few weeks away from running green and fishing well. Salmonflies are right around the corner all over. Our fly fishing guides are just about all booked up through early-August, but we still have a few slots open to get in on our summer fly fishing season from both our Bozeman and Missouri River Basecamps.
June 2019 Montana Fly Fishing Forecast
June is right around the corner and with it will come some of the best fly fishing of the season in Montana. Looking into the upcoming month, dry flies are sure to be on the menu on all of our area rivers. PMDs, Caddis, and the granddaddy of them all: the Salmonfly, will all be hatching by mid-month. June is probably the best time of the year to target trophy trout with dry flies as the big fish take chances and get sloppy with all of the food around.
Bozeman, MT Fly Fishing Report 5/22/19
We are in the full swing of the fly fishing season here in Bozeman, MT and anglers have found great fishing with the recent cool weather trend. Flows have dropped on many of our local rivers, allowing for a window of opportunity to take advantage of late-spring fishing before the inevitability of runoff strikes again. Dry fly fishing has been excellent on the Missouri River, Madison River, and our Paradise Valley Spring Creeks with March Browns, BWOs, caddis, and midges keeping the fish looking up on a daily basis. May is one of the best time of year to find big brown trout rising on the Missouri River before they have been educated. Flows will rise again before they drop for good in 2019, but no better time to hit the river while flows are down, rivers are clear, and fish are rising!

May is here and the fly fishing in Montana has been great. Between the excellent fishing the past few weeks on the Missouri River and the prolific Mother’s Day Caddis hatch on the Yellowstone, our anglers and Montana fly fishing guides have been spoiled rotten. May is always a rollercoaster ride with rivers going up and down, clear and muddy, but we’ve be treated to a great one so far in 2019.

Montana Fly Fishing Skills: Learn How to Cast a Fly Rod
Teaching anglers how to cast a fly rod and cast it well is something our Montana fly fishing guides do on a daily basis. Sometimes we work with seasoned anglers to polish up their stroke but many times we are starting from scratch and teach novice anglers who have never picked up a fly rod the basics. From our experience teaching hundreds of anglers the fundamentals of the cast, we have found a way to break it up into 3 basic steps. These steps are geared primarily toward casting a fly rod with a single dry fly, out of a drift boat, for wild Montana trout as we do so often, but is applicable across the whole wide world of fly fishing.

Bozeman, MT Fly Fishing Report 11/6/18
Snow day in Bozeman. Coming down pretty good, reports indicating several feet deep in the high mountains. What does this mean for anglers that aren’t ready to call it a season yet? Still lots of great fly fishing to be had in Bozeman, Montana. Fly fishing pressure is non-existent on our local rivers like the Madison River and Yellowstone River. Weather becomes the major variable that can hamper success on our rivers in November. Water temps are still great and the fish are on the feed. Float tips this past week on the Madison River were great. Calmer days with highs above freezing will be your best bet from here on out.

The hoppers are here. The banks of the Yellowstone River, Madison River, Missouri River, and many rivers of Yellowstone National Park are buzzing and clicking all day long as hundreds and hundreds of the tasty trout snacks are starting to fly around. We have seen trout on all of these rivers start to key in on our favorite of the terrestrials and it is making for great fly fishing for our anglers and Bozeman, Montana fly fishing guides.
