Stillwater River Fly Fishing
Wilderness Fly Fishing meets Whitewater Floating
Stillwater River Fly Fishing Trips
Fly fishing the Stillwater River with our Montana fly fishing guides is the ultimate Montana whitewater fly fishing experience. The Stillwater River is anything but still. Its origins are high in the Beartooth Mountain Range and it cascades down through some of the most rugged and scenic country in Montana.
Fly fishing day trips on the Stillwater River mean early starts and late evenings for our anglers and guides, but they are rewarded with some of the most scenic floats in the state of Montana and consistently good dry fly fishing. Stillwater River fly fishing trips are all float trips, with the option for wading throughout the day. Our guides use rafts with fishing frames to navigate the many rapids and boulder fields along the length of the Stillwater River. All of our fly fishing guides are experienced professionals with a commitment to safety. The Stillwater River caters to adventurous anglers of all skill levels.
Fly Fishing the Stillwater River
The Stillwater River is swift flowing and littered with boulders that provide a great structure for its wild trout. The many rapids demand excellent oarsmanship. Anglers will find there is never a dull moment on the Stillwater River as the water, the pace of fishing, and action is often all high-speed. It also rewards anglers with some of the best dry fly fishing of the summer.
Strong hatches of stoneflies in July and early August keep the Stillwater River trout well fed and on the feed. Caddisflies and mayflies are also on the menu. By mid-August hopper fishing is solid. What the trout lack in average-size they more than make up for in their willingness to rise to a dry fly.
Our Stillwater River trips are dry fly focused, and all of our guides have the patience, knowledge, and teaching ability to lead anglers to success. Nymphing and streamer fishing can also be productive, but these tactics are rarely employed during the summer months, and best reserved for Spring and Fall fishing.
When fishing is at its best on the Stillwater River it seems like there are trout ready to pounce on your fly behind every rock. River flows are always an important consideration on the Stillwater River as it is only floatable at certain levels. Due to the distance from Bozeman, MT and the variable nature of flows all Stillwater River guided fly fishing trips require advanced bookings, are subject to guide availability, and subject to safe river flows and conditions.
